Why we refer in a targeted way

Veterinary medicine has become so specialised that no single practice can offer every method at the highest level. We have therefore made an honest choice: for certain highly specialised procedures we refer onward, not because we could not do it, but because others do it every day and bring with them the routine, technology and experience that this requires.

For you this means: quality comes before convenience. We only work with partners we know personally and whom we trust, both professionally and as people. The overall care of your pet remains with us throughout: we prepare the referral, hand over all records, stay in touch with the partner and take over the follow-up care.

When we refer

For complex tumour diseases that require chemotherapy.
When specialised radiation or immunotherapies are indicated.
For an oncological second opinion when the prognosis is unclear.

How the referral works

Pre-diagnostics at our practice: clinical examination, imaging, biopsy or tissue sample.
We compile all records and coordinate the referral with VetSpezial.
The specialised therapy takes place in Lehrte-Ahlten.
The follow-up (check-ups, blood work, accompanying medication) is often handled by us again in Cremlingen.

When we refer

When an MRI is needed, for example for soft-tissue findings, brain, spinal cord or intervertebral discs.
When a CT is useful for a precise assessment of bones, lungs or complex structures.
Before surgical interventions, when a precise image makes the procedure safer.

How the referral works

Pre-diagnostics at our practice: ultrasound, X-ray, clinical and neurological examination.
With a clear indication, a targeted referral including the question and previous findings.
The MRI or CT takes place at Am Erzberg, and the report comes directly back to us.
We plan and manage the treatment together with you, in Cremlingen or in coordination with the partner.

How a referral works in general

Pre-examination at our practice. We clarify whether a referral is really the right step, or whether we can answer the question ourselves.
Records for the partner. We provide you with all relevant findings, images and laboratory values for the appointment with the specialist, usually digitally, on request also printed.
Appointment with the partner. We coordinate the appointment with you and the partner practice. You then travel there with your pet directly.
Follow-up at our practice. The report comes back to Cremlingen. The continued care (check-ups, medication, conversations) is taken over again by us, in close coordination with the partner.

Am I no longer your patient then?

Yes, you still are. We remain your family vet. The referral is a targeted specialist consultation for a particular procedure. The ongoing care of your pet, preventive care, follow-up and all everyday questions stay with us.

Who looks after the follow-up?

As a rule, we do, in close coordination with the partner. Check-up appointments, blood work, accompanying medication and progress conversations take place with us in Cremlingen. This way the care stays in a familiar environment and close to home.

Who covers the costs?

The costs for the specialised treatment are borne by the owner, as with any veterinary service. Pet health insurance can, depending on the policy, cover a significant share. You can read more on our page Pet insurance. Before any referral we openly discuss the likely range with you.
